Three Ways to Refresh Your Home for Spring

Sure, you’ve heard of spring cleaning, but have you made plans for your spring refresh yet? Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home’s decor, furnishings, and style. Here’s what our clients do every year to make sure their homes are always pristine and guest-ready.

First thing’s first: Edit your decor

The biggest mistake people make when trying to make their home look more put-together or complete is adding to it. Often what a home really needs is subtraction. Marie Kondo did this well - if items in your home aren’t sparking joy, donate them!

Decor for the sake of decor is never a good thing. Decor in your home should make sense, in scale, purpose, and style. Consider if the decor makes sense for the home. For example, beach and mountain decor do not fit in an Alexandria, VA home. If it doesn’t match, ditch it. Editing the items that aren’t cohesive for your space will help you clear space for things that are.

Clear out any old seasonal decor. No shade to you if you still have Christmas trees or lights up (life is busy!), but now is the time to put it away.

This applies to furniture, too. If you have furniture that isn’t cohesive, doesn’t serve a purpose, or doesn’t bring you happiness, let it go. It’s so easy to hold onto something because it was given to you, or it was a great deal, or it isn’t broken, but these are often the pieces that are ruining your nearly perfect look!

Next up: Give your home some life

Start by selecting some beautiful vases, either in your personal collection or from our curated list of favorites here in the Julia Rose Interiors Shop. Place your vases around your home — I like to have at least one vase in every main living space of a home. A beautiful vase at the entryway ensures that my guests are always greeted with fresh florals, just like they are in 5-star hotels. I also put a vases in my dining, living, and kitchen areas.

You need floral stem cutters, clippers, floral tape, and thorn strippers (for roses). Cut the leaves from the stems of the flowers and create a grid in your vase with the floral tape so your flowers stand tall and don’t crowd each other. Floral support tubes also help immensely in keeping your flowers looking strong. Fill your vases with florals or plants in a color scheme that compliments your decor.

Fresh florals and a beautiful vase are the fastest way to add life and color to a room. To get the best floral design, use flowers of a similar color scheme in a vase. Too many bright colors in one vase starts to look cheap, so stick to just a couple of colors or one color. Be sure to have greenery and fillers in your vase.

Lastly: Add in tasteful seasonal decor…

The best way to achieve seasonal decor, is the also the best way to achieve anything: with subtlety. You don’t want your seasonal decor to be overt. Avoid signs that have bunnies on them or easter baskets. Instead, refresh your coffee table books for some in a pastel color way. Exchange your pillow covers. Update your tablescapes. Switch out your artwork. Refresh your decorative objects for some that are a bit more whimsical and spring-like. Look for pieces that are handmade, antiqued, and/or original.
